AMOA-Arthouse is excited to announce its roster of spring 2012 exhibitions at Laguna Gloria, which
includes Art on the Green, New Works: Leah Haney, and Collection Selections: The Barrett Collection.
Together, the three shows comprise a blend of continued tradition with creative curatorial direction,
heralding an exciting future for AMOA-Arthouse and launching the first complete season of
programming for the newly-merged institution. To supplement each exhibition, the museum will
offer a rich selection of public programs designed to engage diverse audiences, both new
and established, with the contemporary art on view at AMOA-Arthouse’s Laguna Gloria location
at 3809 West 35th Street.
Laguna Gloria’s sprawling twelve-acre grounds on the shores of Lake Austin serve as the
picturesque backdrop for Art on the Green, an exciting, interactive exhibition of artist-
designed miniature golf holes on view from March 9 through May 20, 2012. Texas-based
artists, architects, designers, students, and collectives were invited to create a course
that responds to the unique natural landscape of the site, encourages play, and
stands as independent works of art. The scenic lawns, woods, and paths that surround
the Driscoll Villa will host nine individual golf holes, with a bonus tenth hole installed in
the lobby of AMOA-Arthouse’s downtown site at the Jones Center (700 Congress Avenue)
to link this exhibition to both of the museum’s locations.

Visitors of all ages can play the nine-hole course, encountering new ways to engage with
the art through active participation. Open to the public, the exhibition is both outdoor installation
and community social experience. Art on the Green presents a refreshing
counterpart to AMOA-Arthouse’s permanent sculpture collection installed throughout
the Laguna Gloria grounds. With both permanent and temporary three-dimensional
works on view, players are encouraged to reconsider the sculptural medium and
imagine the possibilities for a future sculpture trail on the site.

“We wanted to offer a creative, playful art project that welcomes visitors to come
experience Laguna Gloria at a beautiful time of year in Austin,” explains Curator of
Exhibitions and Public Programs Andrea Mellard. Participating artists for Art on the
Green include Boozefox, D-CRAIN Design and Construction, Go Sculpture Go, Ink
Tank, Legge Lewis Legge, Okay Mountain, Joseph Phillips, Thoughtbarn,
Brad Tucker, and Bob Wade.

Also on view at Laguna Gloria this spring are New Works: Leah Haney and Collection
Selections: The Barrett Collection. New Works is on ongoing, quarterly series highlighting
contemporary art by innovative local artists working in diverse media. Leah Haney will
debut fresh, new paintings that toy with our perceptions of spatial relationships and
depth. New Works: Leah Haney will be on view in the Gatehouse Gallery at Laguna
Gloria from March 9 to April 30, 2012.

Leah Haney’s artistic process begins with found images of domestic spaces, often
culled from interior design magazines or vintage home and gardening books. After
pasting her appropriated source material onto wood panels, Haney extends from
and elaborates upon the boundaries of the cut-out room to create a larger
perspective grid, transcending the original image’s two dimensions into the
illusion of a third. Employing various stenciling, layering, sanding, and scraping
techniques, Haney links the domestic sphere to the cosmos in surprising, illogical ways.

Collection Selections: The Barrett Collection showcases pieces from AMOA-Arthouse’s
newly-acquired Barrett Collection, one of the most significant and comprehensive
compilations of work by Texas artists. On view inside the Driscoll Villa from March 9 to
August 19, 2012, Collection Selections: The Barrett Collection includes paintings and
sculpture by artists David Bates, Bill Haveron, Tracy Hicks, Norman Kary, Jim Love,
Brian Portman, Linda Ridgway, Julie Speed, Danny Williams, and Sydney Yeager.

The Barrett Collection’s gift to Texas museums large and small provides a unique
opportunity to witness the wealth of talent, technical ability, and originality made
manifest among artists hailing from the Lone Star State. Juxtaposing works of various
media and vision, the exhibition draws thematic and symbolic parallels that unify
and frame the collection as a whole. Collection Selections: The Barrett Collection
provides an exciting glimpse into the spectrum of artistic personalities that call the
state home.
